Training and Certification Workshop Types, Details, and Certification Renewal

Field personnel training and certification saves you time and money by avoiding costly problems when inexperienced people miss the "tricks of the trade."

PTI offers five training and certification workshops for field personnel shown to comply with requirements of IBC, ACI 318, and ACI 301. Proper training and education of personnel involved in post-tensioning field operations—installers, inspectors, engineers, and others—are vital to ensuring the performance, serviceability, durability, and safety of post-tensioned concrete construction. Please refer to the workshops below for certification requirements and detailed flyers outlining important course information and pricing. Online registrations can be made by clicking on the PDF link under the 2011 Certification Workshop Schedule heading.

Renewal of your PTI field certification—Field personnel certification expires 4 (four) years after the date of the exam and must be kept current by successful completion of a renewal exam that emphasizes recent specification changes. PTI has all field certification programs available for renewal online.

PTI Plant Certification Programs

PTI offers two programs for certifying facilities producing materials used in post-tensioning systems.

Certification of Plants Producing Unbonded Single Strand Tendons—Launched in 1989, the first program, Unbonded Single Strand Tendon Fabrication Facilities, is for facilities that fabricate unbonded single strand tendons. Since its inception, participation in the program has grown steadily. Fifty-five plants are certified, which represents approximately 95% of the industry's production. In 2007, PTI added provisions to permit certification of mobile fabricating facilities in addition to fixed plants.

PTI is in the process of preparing an application for American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accreditation for Product Certification. ANSI accreditation provides a means for the verification of the quality of certification programs and to assist owners/specifiers in making informed decisions. The ANSI Accreditation Program for Certification Bodies is intended to improve industry practices and to differentiate quality programs. In preparation for this effort, PTI has established a standing committee designated as the “Unbonded Tendon Plant Certification Committee” (UTPC Committee) to serve as the certification body and to implement the Unbonded Tendon Plant Certification Program. The UTPC Committee is responsible for developing the standards that form the technical basis for granting certification and for the formulation of policy matters relating to the operation of the certification program.

In accordance with ANSI procedures, PTI is required to give due notice of any changes it intends to make in its requirements for certification. Accordingly, the following draft documents are being made available for public review for a 45-day discussion period:

·         PTI Quality Management System Manual – documents PTI’s quality system and sets forth procedures and requirements for the operation and administration of the UTPC program.

·         PTI Certification Committee Manual –sets forth the rules and procedures for the operation of PTI certification committees

·         Manual for Certification of Plants Producing Unbonded Single Strand Tendons, 6th Edition – sets forth the procedures, and administrative and technical requirements for plant certification.

All interested parties are invited to review these draft documents and provide comment. Copies may be downloaded by visiting PTI’s website or by clicking the links above.

Comments should be e-mailed to mailto:Ted.Neff@post-tensioning.org or mailed to Theodore Neff, Executive Director, Post-Tensioning Institute, 38800 Country Club Drive, Farmington Hills, MI 48331. Comments will be accepted through January 20, 2012.

Certification of Plants Producing Prestressed Concrete (PC) Strand—The second program PC Strand Plants, launched in 2007 and is for factories that manufacture PC strand. The program includes standardization of reporting practices and documentation, as well as establishes required testing procedures and specified minimum intervals. The certification of a factory under this program indicates that the factory and personnel are capable of producing PC strand in conformance with the program's requirements. To date, several international plants in Asia and the Middle East have been certified and inspections of additional plants are underway.
