PTI Education Initiatives: PTI Academy, Technical Sessions, Design Seminars & Workforce Development

Tim Christle, Executive Vice President of the Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI), and Brandon Harman, PTI Engineer, delve into PTI’s commitment to education and its efforts to serve a diverse membership. They discuss the board-level Education Committee (EDC 130) and its pivotal role in developing and distributing educational content. This includes the PTI Academy webinar series, launched in 2024. These free monthly webinars, presented by industry experts, are available both live and on demand. They cover a variety of post-tensioning topics and provide opportunities to earn continuing education credits.

The conversation also highlights PTI’s convention technical sessions, organized into key focus areas: buildings, slab-on-ground, bridges and repair, providing 16 hours of content with opportunities to earn PDH and AIA credits. Notably, the 2026 Convention will take place in May in Long Beach, California.

Additionally, they explore PTI’s new Design Seminars for buildings and slab-on-ground (a two-part series) and emphasize the educational benefits of field personnel certification workshops for engineers and project teams. The episode concludes with an overview of PTI’s outreach initiatives to universities and structural engineering associations, aimed at advancing workforce development and fostering industry collaboration.

Episode 1: Revolutionizing Sport Courts with Post-Tensioned Concrete

Join PTI Engineer Brandon Harman as he chats with PTI past President Harley Nethken about the game-changing benefits of post-tensioned (PT) sport courts. From tennis and pickleball to basketball and running tracks, discover how PT technology is transforming court construction.

In this episode, Harley explains how PT pre-compressed concrete combats temperature changes, soil movement and flexural stresses, creating a durable, long-lasting base with minimal joints, often in 60x60 ft patterns placed between courts or under net lines. Learn why PT courts are thinner (around 4.5 inches vs. 6+ inches for conventional concrete), use less steel and outperform asphalt courts in longevity.

The conversation also dives into key PTI resources like DC 10.1 (Design of PT Slabs-on-Ground) and DC 10.3 (Design, Construction, and Maintenance of Post-Tensioned Concrete Courts), along with finishing tips from the U.S. Tennis Court & Track Builders Association. Harley highlights the “three-legged stool” for success: sound design, PTI-certified plants with traceability and certified field personnel for safe stressing and quality installation.

Whether you're a sports enthusiast, engineer or construction professional, this episode is packed with valuable insights you won’t want to miss!

Episode 2: Durability, Savings and Future Trends of Post-Tensioned Sport Courts

At World of Concrete, PTI engineer Brandon Harman interviews PTI past president and Fellow Jack Graves about the benefits of post-tensioned (PT) concrete sports courts. Graves explains that PT courts offer greater durability and lower maintenance than asphalt and conventionally reinforced slabs by reducing cracking.

The discussion also covers capping existing courts, subgrade preparation, slab thickness, certification, safety and growing PT applications such as pickleball courts, running tracks and sports fields.
