Field Personnel Certification Program Overview

PTI offers training and certification workshops for field personnel shown to comply with requirements of IBC, ACI 318, and ACI 301. Proper training and education of personnel involved in post-tensioning (PT) field operations—installers, inspectors, engineers, and others—are vital to ensuring the performance, serviceability, durability, and safety of PT concrete construction. This 2-day workshop outlines the basic body of knowledge that should be possessed by all personnel involved in the installation and inspection of single strand unbonded post-tensioning (PT) systems. It also serves as an effective introduction for personnel new to post-tensioning, while at the same time providing support and organization for experienced persons.  The course and study manual are also offered in Spanish by requiesting a special request workshop.

Former "Level 1 Unbonded PT - Field Installation" is now "Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation"

Former "Level 2 Unbonded PT Inspector" is split in two:

  • "Level 2 Unbonded PT Installer"; based on installation field work experience.
  • "Level 2 Unbonded PT Inspector"; based on inspection field work experience.

This comprehensive workshop combines information from Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation and Level 2 Unbonded PT into a 3-day course. The 3-day model is designed to reduce travel expense and allow installers, inspectors, building officials, engineers, and industry personnel to obtain Level 2 Unbonded PT Installer or Inspector certification in a shorter window of time. This workshop will enhance the knowledge and capabilities of installers and inspectors and other key personnel involved in the field inspection of single strand unbonded post-tensioning (PT) systems.

    • Exam minimum score: 70% (If you already hold Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation certification, passing score of minimum 70% constitutes renewal.)
    • Field work experience: None

Requirements for "Level 2 Unbonded PT Installer" certification

    • Workshop attendance, all 3 days; if you already hold Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation certification, you need to attend days 2 and 3 only.)
    • Exam minimum score: 80%
    • Work experience: 500 hours (installation of unbonded PT on superstructure projects); click here for an affidavit form to prove your experience. Field work experience may be submitted anytime within four years of the initial certification.

Requirements for "Level 2 Unbonded PT Inspector" certification

    • Workshop attendance, all 3 days; if you already hold Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation certification, you need to attend days 2 and 3 only.)

This intensive and comprehensive 2-1/2 day workshop is designed specifically for personnel with extensive prior field experience. It extends the knowledge and capabilities of field personnel in superstructure PT and all other unbonded PT applications. Hands-on training is included and it requires the student to demonstrate a proficiency of the necessary skills for working with single strand unbonded post-tensioning (PT) systems.

Attendees of this workshop can receive Level 1 or Level 2 certification based on exam performance and the following requirements:

Workshop prerequisite to attend workshop

    • 2000 hours in the last 5 years (minimum of 100 hours of stressing) of unbonded PT work on superstructure projects, OR
    • 4000 hours total (minimum of 200 hours of stressing) of unbonded PT work on superstructure projects, OR
    • Current Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation certification plus 500 hours in the last 5 years (minimum 50 hours of stressing) of unbonded PT work on superstructure projects.

Requirements for Level 2 Unbonded PT Ironworker certification

This comprehensive 3-day workshop covers the installation and various types of duct systems, diverse methods for installation of prestressing steel (including strand and bar), stressing equipment operation and procedures, as well as operation of grouting equipment and grouting techniques.

Attendees of this workshop can receive Level 1 or Level 2 certification based on exam performance and the following requirements:

This 2-day workshop is designed specifically for installation and stressing of single strand unbonded post-tensioning (PT) systems for residential and light commercial slabs-on-ground. How Do I Achieve Level 2 Certification?

If you already have Level 1 Unbonded certification, you can obtain Level 2 Unbonded certification in the following ways:

    • If you originally took a Level 1&2 Unbonded workshop, scored higher than 80% on your exam, you can just obtain the work experience, submit the affidavit, and Level 2 certification will be issued. You have up to 4 years from your original certification date to submit the work experience.
    • If you originally took a Level 1 Unbonded workshop, you may register for the last two days of a Level 1&2 workshop, sit for the exam, submit the work experience to obtain Level 2 certification.
    • If you have Level 1 Multistrand certification, you must retake the entire workshop and submit the work experience affidavit to obtain Level 2 Multistrand certification.

Workshop refund/cancellation/transfer policy—PTI will refund registration fees if canceled in advance of the workshop as follows: 100% of the fees will be refunded for requests made more than 21 days in advance of the workshop. The fee less an $85 cancellation charge will be refunded for requests made 8 to 21 days in advance. No refunds will be issued for requests made within 7 days of the workshop. A registration can be transferred to another workshop of the same type within the same calendar year within 3 days of the workshop; in such case a transfer fee of $85 will be charged. NO Exceptions to this policy can be granted as PTI makes commitments with venues ahead of time.

PTI reserves the right to cancel or reschedule workshops at any time, and in such case, will refund 100% of the registration fees. If PTI cancels or reschedules a workshop in which you are enrolled, you will be contacted at the e-mail address you provided when registering.

Venue size limitations may require some classes to place a cap on registration prior to the workshop. Workshops fill quickly, register early to ensure your space.

For registrations 7 days or closer to the workshop, a $75 administrative surcharge will be added.

Instruction language of these workshops is English. All attendees must understand, speak and read basic English. For Spanish workshops please contact PTI.

Spanish workbooks and exams may be requested at the time of registration. If not requested in advance, they will not be available from the instructor at the workshop.

It is the responsibility of the attendee to verify that the PDH contact hours earned at the workshop meet the requirements of the state board of professional licensure for continuing education credits

You may re-take any exam up at any of our regularly scheduled locations within one year of your initial workshop. Two re-takes are allowed by registering here. The exam will be proctored during the last day of the workshop.
