Design Seminar Descriptions

A half-day seminar (4 PDH/0.4 CEU credits)

This seminar provides attendees with an understanding of post-tensioning systems, post-tensioning design and analysis, and construction considerations. Durability aspects of present PT systems, key design concepts, code requirements, and practical design and construction tips will be discussed.

This seminar is designed for individuals with little or no experience in post-tensioning design.

Highlights of the course include:

  • Post-Tensioning Technology: Materials, fabrication, installation considerations, common systems and applicable specifications.
  • Design & analysis: Key concepts such as load balancing, secondary moments, prestress losses, applicable code requirements and their impact on design.
  • Applications: Project examples to illustrate various uses of post-tensioning in buildings, tendon arrangement in common floor systems, use of external post-tensioning in the retrofit of an existing slab, facts and myths about post-tensioned as compared to reinforced concrete slabs.
  • Construction: Installation considerations, issues related to drawing review, inspection, interaction with other trades, various structural element interaction and construction/coordination issues.

A half-day seminar (4 PDH/0.4 CEU credits)

This intensive seminar will review post-tensioning systems.  Focus will be on post-tensioning design and analysis, and construction considerations. Presentations will focus on design, analysis, and construction of post-tensioned buildings and will include hands-on training on the design and analysis of new post-tensioned building structures. Durability aspects of present PT systems, key design concepts, code requirements, and practical design and construction tips will also be discussed.

This seminar is designed for individuals with some experience in post-tensioning design.

Highlights of the course include:

  • Post-Tensioning Technology: Recent innovations in post-tensioning materials, fabrication, installation considerations, common systems and applicable specifications.
  • Design & analysis: Key concepts such as load balancing, secondary moments and prestress losses, applicable recent building code requirements and their impact on design, hands-on preliminary design with factors affecting the selection of structural systems, detailed analysis with techniques for modeling of one- and two-way slabs, and structural drawings and detailing.
  • Applications: Project examples to illustrate various uses of post-tensioning in buildings, tendon arrangement in common floor systems, use of external post-tensioning in the retrofit of an existing slab, facts and myths about post-tensioned as compared to reinforced concrete slabs.
  • Construction; Repair Considerations: Installation considerations, common design mistakes, issues related to drawing review, inspection, interaction with other trades, various structural element interaction, and construction/coordination issues; repairs of post-tensioned structures.

A full-day seminar (8 PDH/0.8 CEU credits)

This comprehensive seminar was developed for engineers and designers actively involved in post-tensioning design. The in-depth seminar will include hands-on training on the design and analysis of new post-tensioned building structures and will cover the following aspects in the design of post-tensioned structures:

  • Preliminary Design: Factors that affect the selection of structural systems, key aspects and steps involved in the design of post-tensioned structures, important recent building code provisions relating to the design of post-tensioned structures.
  • Detailed Analysis: Effective techniques for modeling of one- and two- way slabs, detailed examples of common types of structural systems using hand calculations as well as commonly used software, hands-on exercises of practical situations to explain the basic concepts.
  • Detailing and Structural Drawings; Repair Considerations: Causes of restraint and ways of mitigating problems arising from restraint, common design mistakes that are seen on structural drawings and solutions to common design/construction situations; repairs of post-tensioned structures.

(8 PDH/0.8 CEU credits)
This comprehensive, in-depth seminar is intended for geotechnical and structural engineers and others involved in the design of post-tensioned slabs-on-ground on expansive soils. The seminar will highlight the new features and changes of the recently published PTI DC10.5-12 Standard Requirements for Design and Analysis of Shallow Post-Tensioned Concrete Foundations on Expansive Soils.

Practical guidance will be given on:

  • Evaluating climate and site conditions
  • Determining relevant soil properties
  • Predicting soil movements using the new geotechnical analysis procedure
  • Designing for the controlling criteria of moments, shear and deflection
  • Applying the new cracked section provisions
  • The seminar will heavily emphasize design practice and will present recommendations for optimizing PT slab designs. Design comparisons and examples will be presented to demonstrate these concepts and the application of the PTI Design method.
Special request design seminar invoicing and cancellation policy

1) PTI Special Request Design Seminar schedule is preliminary for the purpose of invoicing that is based on a preliminary number of attendees provided by the Client.

2)  A Special Request Design Seminar is not scheduled until the invoice is paid in full. Until that time, the schedule is subject to change based on the changing availability of PTI instructors.

3) The Special Request Design Seminar invoice must be paid a minimum of 3 weeks before the first day of the seminar.

4) If the actual number is higher than the preliminary number of seminar attendees, PTI will invoice Client at the time of the seminar for the additional attendees; this invoice must be paid before any CEU certificates are issued. If the final number of attendees is lower, PTI will issue a refund at the time of the seminar for the difference in number of attendees.

5) The payments made for Special Request Design Seminars cancelled up to 21 days before the seminar are refunded less the already incurred expenses by instructors and / or PTI.

6) For cancellations less than 21 days before the seminar there is no refund, unless the seminar is rescheduled within the same calendar year and the incurred expenses by instructors and / or PTI are paid.
